Windows Phone Store has only 5 out of Top 10 most frequently used smartphone apps!

globalwebindex data

GlobalWebIndex has published a list of Top 10 most frequently used Smartphone apps. Unfortunately Windows Phone Store has only 5 out of the 10 apps.
According to the data Google Maps is the most frequently used app in the world accounting a share of 54%(that's huge!). The apps included in the top 10 are Google Maps, Facebook, YouTube, Google+, WeChat, Twitter, Skype, Facebook Messenger,  Whatsapp and Instagram. We do have great unofficial client apps for Google maps,YouTube and Instagram. Therefore Windows Phone users shouldn't worry much!

We will discuss about each of these apps and their alternatives below:-

  1. Google Maps:- According to the data Google Maps is used by 54% of the users. But Google haven't releases any native apps for Windows Phone platform. Therefore the app is missing from the store. But we do have an unofficial client app called gMaps. The app is great and has lot of features. You can read more about the app from our previous post.. If you don't want to use Google service then you also have Nokia exclusive's like Here Maps, Here Drive, etc for Nokia users.
  2. Facebook:- Facebook holds the 2nd position accounting 44%of the share. An official app is available at the store for download.
  3. YouTube:- Windows Phone Store does not have an official YouTube app. There are reports that Microsoft and Google are working together on an app. But currently we have plenty of great unofficial apps like myTube, Metrotube,Tube Pro,etc.
  4. Google+ :- Unfortunately we don't have an official app available. Also a good unofficial app is not present currently.
  5. WeChat:-An official app is available at the store for download
  6. Twitter:-An official app is available at the store for download
  7. Skype:-An official app is available at the store for download
  8. Facebook Messenger:- Though an official app is absent Windows Phone does have an integrated Facebook Messenger feature.
  9. Whatsapp:-An official app is available at the store for download
  10. Instagram:- An official app is absent from the store but we do have plenty of amazing 3rd party apps like Instance  and 6tagram

The list shows that the OS needs to improve more and Microsoft have to work really hard on the matter. But we do have unofficial clients which act as substitute for the app. So need to worry much!

So what do you think?
Are you unhappy/happy with any of the apps?

  1. Nice data by GlobalWebIndex, but seems the data is skewed to Android. And it will be, as Android has a major market share. Also there are alternate to Google Maps like Nokia Here Maps, Here Transit, Here Drive, Traffic+ etc which are much better in my opinion and hence the data should have been applications on various mobile OS rather than just applications on smartphones. Even there are alternatives to applications like Instagram which are available on WP platform, but seems its just herd mentality with people going gaga over a single application and wanting it on WP, please guys give it a break try applications from other developers who are working on WP applications. I wouldnt want an application on my WP just because its there on Android or iOS.......

    1. That's great anuragupta15.
Ofcourse the data is dominated by android. Eventhough there are other apps available people always want to go for the native app. That's the general trend!

Never mind of these statistics. One day wp will also reach heights!
      Cheer up!

  2. 8. Facebook Messenger: The integrated FB messenger is a piece of sh.t, I think so. I don't get a lots of messages from facebook and the notifications late in most cases.

    1. Yes I too experience such issues. If you have such problems try removing facebook from your phone and link it again. This worked for me couple of times.
One of my team member tried the amber update and found that the messenger issue was fixed.

      Where's your location?
Are you using an unlocked phone?

  5. Thank You for your comment yash dabas!

Currently you can share videos but you need to caoture it via the app. This feature will be added sooner.
You can fix the Facebook problem by again re syncing your account. We have reports that thhe time issue is been resolved by GD3 update wich you can expect this month via OTA.

We all know that Windows Phone OS has some disadvantages and bugs. But don't worry as the OS will improve sooner. Please do note that the OS isn't even 1 year old. Some bugs will be fixed in GDR2 followed by GD3 expected by Nov/Dec. But I can assure you that most of the problems will be solved by the next major update Windows Phone blue(8.1) Wait for it and don't lose hope!
Comment below if you have any other trouble regarding Windows Phone and we will try to fix it out!
    Thanks once again!
